History Curriculum
A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
Our Vision Intent
At St. Agnes, underpinned by our vision, ‘Learning together in God’s Love’, we aim to fully include every child in an immersive, rich, and structured history curriculum. Our intent is to provide a broad, balanced, and differentiated historical education, fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum and encompassing British Values.
In Year 1, we explore the concept of change over time, focusing on transformations in life over the past century. We expand this vision in Year 2, diving into more distant past events that have profoundly influenced modern life, thereby highlighting the importance of historical understanding.
In KS2, we construct a detailed picture of the early history of the British Isles, from the Bronze and Iron Ages up to 1066, examining Roman rule, Anglo-Saxon settlements, and Viking invasions. Alongside this, we study global ancient civilisations like the Egyptians, Greeks, and Mayans, as well as key turning points in more modern history, such as the Battle of Britain. This teaching aims to equip pupils with knowledge about how Britain has been shaped by and influenced the wider world.
Implementation
Our implementation methods blend classroom experiences and fieldwork, capitalising on our local history-rich environment. We use a variety of resources, aiming for progressive development of historical concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes, enabling students to question, explore, and engage with their topics.
We also organise educational visits to historical sites, museums, and galleries, invite inspiring visitors to the school, and arrange events such as our Grandparents Day in Key Stage 1. These activities are designed to bring history to life, allow children to learn about their personal histories and those of their families, and link real-life experiences to their unique contexts.
Throughout this educational journey, we continuously instill critical thinking skills, the ability to weigh evidence and generate arguments, and a chronological understanding of historical events. Children are encouraged to ask questions about their learning and are given 'sticky learning' objectives, including key vocabulary, to study and embed into their long-term memory.

Impact
The impact of our curriculum aims to prepare children with the historical knowledge and skills necessary for Key Stage 3 and beyond. We desire for children to leave our school with a thorough, rounded understanding of history, capable of contextualizing and ordering historical events, and appreciating how the past has shaped the present. Our hope is that their education at St Agnes ignites a passion for the past that positively influences their future.
