Computing Curriculum

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Our Vision Intent

At St Agnes, we aim to ensure our computing curriculum is fully inclusive to every child, given the significant role of computing in our children’s daily lives. Our intent is to place our children at the forefront of new technology, developing their attitudes, skills, and knowledge to become competent with computers.

In today's world, computers are integral. We aim to expose our children to a wealth of learning opportunities and transferrable skills, both explicitly within the Computing curriculum and across other subjects. Our mission is to keep pace with technological changes and developments. Through the study of Computing, children will develop a wide range of fundamental skills, knowledge, understanding, and the ability to keep themselves safe, especially online, equipping them for a successful future.

We have now incorporated the Teach Computing curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage and enable the development of high-quality computing skills.

Implementation

All our children participate in diverse Computing lessons. In Early Years, we introduce understanding of internet safety as children explore the world around them and how technology forms part of their learning and understanding of the world. We provide opportunities to develop their computer skills by honing their fine motor skills, allowing them to use a range of tools competently, safely, and confidently.

Within all year groups, the children are taught Algorithms, Computing systems, Creating media, Data & information, Design & development, Effective use of tools, Impact of technology, Networks, Programming, Safety & security

In Key Stage 1, we teach students the fundamentals of computing, such as understanding what algorithms are, how they're implemented as programs on digital devices, and how to create and debug simple programs. They learn to use technology safely and respectfully, maintaining personal information privacy, and identifying resources for help and support when they have concerns about online content or contact.

In Key Stage 2, children learn more advanced skills, like designing, writing, and debugging programs, understanding computer networks and internet, and evaluating digital content. They also learn to use technology safely, responsibly, and respectfully, recognizing acceptable and unacceptable behaviour online.

Throughout each stage, we utilize exciting half-termly units and 'sticky learning' objectives, which include key vocabulary that children will study, learn, and hopefully embed into long-term memory.

We are continuously updating our computing equipment to give all children access to the most up-to-date technology. With 64 laptops and 32 iPads, children can develop high-quality computing skills using various programs, including Scratch (coding) and ESPRESSO.

Impact

Computing is transforming the lives of everyone. Through teaching Computing and using the Teach Computing curriculum, we equip children to participate in a rapidly changing world, increasingly transformed by technology. Beyond equipping them with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, we place significant emphasis on safe usage. It is crucial that children understand the consequences of using the internet and know how to keep themselves safe in this digital world. Developing computing skills is a key factor in enabling children to be confident, creative, and safe digital citizens.
