Forgiveness

Forgiveness can be a struggle for most. In life, people behave in ways that can offend us. Holding a grudge might feel natural, but the Bible encourages us to forgive.

Recent studies of forgiveness show that practising forgiveness can improve our mental and physical health. But how do we practice forgiveness and experience the peace it brings?

Jesus gives us the perfect example of forgiveness. While in agony on the cross, Jesus called out, exclaiming “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34).

"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."  Mahatma Gandi

Generosity

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Corinthians 9:6-8

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life out of what we give."  Winston Churchill

Respect and Reverence

We must embrace our differences, even celebrate our diversity. We must glory in the fact that God created each of us as unique human beings. God created us different, but God did not create us for separation. God created us different that we might recognize our need for one another. We must reverence our uniqueness, reverence everything that makes us what we are: our language, our culture, our religious tradition.

Justice

We are looking at things that are fair, and things that are unfair. And we’re also thinking about the part we can play in making the world around us a better and fairer, a place for everyone and encouraging us to stand up for others who are being treated badly and unfairly.  We want our school and our world to be a fair and just place, where everyone feels safe and flourishes.

"All religions try to benefit people, with the same basic message of the need for love and compassion, for justice and honesty, for contentment." Dalai Lama

Responsibility

When you think of the word “responsibility”, what comes to mind? Getting your school assignments done on time? Helping your family with the daily chores? Watching out for your little brother or sister?

Responsibility definitely means all those things, but it means something more too.  Responsibility is also about looking inside yourself and doing all you can to be the best person possible. And trying to see what you can do to help others.  In short, when you practice responsibility, you’re on your way to making your life the very best it can be!

“The time is always right to do what is right” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

“When a man points a finger at someone else, he should remember that four of his fingers are pointing at himself.” – Louis Nizer

“The price of greatness is responsibility.” – Winston Churchill

“With great power comes great responsibility.” – Voltaire

Courage

Courage is not just about being brave if we are hurt or ill. It’s also about showing courage when we try something new and when we need to bounce back when things go wrong. It’s also being brave enough to stand up for what we know is right and being brave enough to be ourselves which might mean being different from others around us.

“All our dreams can come true…if we have the courage to pursue them.”  Walt Disney

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”  André Gide

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.”  Mary Anne Radmacher

Service

Service is the sacrifice of one’s own desires, time, and energy to benefit others. It is being selfless instead of selfish.

"The best gift you could ever give someone is your time because you're giving them something you'll never get back." Rick Warren

“Those who are the happiest are those who do the most for others.” -Booker T. Washington
